Déjà vu all over again and again

This interesting bit of information crossed our desk the other day:
“The Mid-Hudson region lacks an integrated transportation network that ties together its major population areas with centers of commerce. Additionally, the existing transportation systems are fragmented, as is the planning for future transportation systems.

“With a vision to the future, the Mid-Hudson Valley needs to be viewed as (a) cohesive economic, social and cultural center which requires an integrated transportation network in order to attain success in the early 21st century.

“Of special importance is the need for an integrated transportation network to link the major urban centers in the northern and southern sections of the Mid-Hudson region.” read more

More than words

To say George Carlin was an interesting guy would be a major understatement. (Yes, he could have done a five-minute riff on “major understatement.”) He pushed the envelope until he broke through it. Then he realized there were other envelopes to bust through.

As he got older he pushed ever harder – a bit crankier – but nevertheless he didn’t fade away nor rust.

Carlin, who died at age 71 on June 22, took on the sacred cows and then gored them mercilessly with his words. read more

Farewell, dear prince

In the newspaper business you meet a lot of characters. It’s one of the perks.

Food, not just for thought

The dustbin of history

Tap dancing

Fueling the economy

What goes up ...

What's the beef? Not enough pork

Time to sink the boat

Floating a new idea

The honeymoon’s over

Subprimal scream, chapter 13

Timing is everything

A troubled bridge over murky waters

The Tappan Zee Bridge is a lightning rod for news. The 3-mile span connecting Westchester and Rockland counties attracts all sorts of attention. Commuters curse it. Shipworms eat it. Executives and environmentalists fight over it. Others jump from it.

Revolution, government style

Banking on failure

Uncle Sam’s Bail and Bonds Inc.

Keep your shirt on …and your pants

Care to lead?

Et tu, Brute?

Psst, wanna buy a bridge?

Valley of the damned

The big fix

Zoned out?

Pluses and minuses

Facing off

Time to power up

Cut the crap

If we look back 20 years from now, 2008 could be a defining year for the Hudson Valley. Given the recent takeover of Stewart International Airport by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, will our once-sleepy airport morph into a sprawling, uncontrolled mega jetport or will it become a model regional airport?

The devil's in the details

The big R

Deck the malls, cyber and otherwise

Shopping for an excuse to shop

Everyone wants good jobs for the Hudson Valley. But what everyone doesn't understand is just how difficult it has become to attract those jobs. Economic development has become a fiercely competitive game played out on a global field.

There's a reason it's called crude

New bottom line for business – green

Time to focus on the important things

Health schmealth

Much has been reported lately about the need to repair our nation's crumbling infrastructure. We are also hearing more about how cities are revitalizing their downtown areas with creative economic development strategies.

Putting a price on health care

Riding the economic waves

You are correct there is no “I” in team and Hudson Valley Tourism, a regional 10-county, tourism promotion organization is a fine example of that.

There's no ‘I' in team

It is times of crisis that define those who can help and are part of the solution and those who can hurt and are part of the problem.

Remember, lest we repeat
